
Write on the Money is presented by Helpmann Academy and Carclew. This free workshop is designed especially for emerging creatives wanting to learn how to write grants and to refine and improve their grant writing skills.
Offering handy tips and tricks to emerging South Australian artists, applying for grants with Helpmann Academy or Carclew or both!
This will be a practical, informative session to help you secure the support you need to get your project off the ground. You will learn how to summarise your project, respond to criteria, conquer your budget, and make a selection panel sit up in their chair and take notice.
WHAT?
- The crucial elements of who, what, where, why, when and how – and getting to the point
- How to define your project, its outcomes and why this needs to happen now
- How to calculate the cost of your project and prepare a budget
- The ins and outs of support materials
- What it means to make your project viable
A panel of industry experts including Tess Syme, Program Manager, Helpmann Academy and Joel Byrne, Coordinator, Funding Programs, Carclew will offer their insights on what it takes to write a successful grant application, and the opportunities this can unlock for you to launch your career.
The workshop also includes a Q&A panel discussion with emerging artists Shabana Azeez, Keira J. Simmons and Ellis Moseley.
This session includes networking drinks.

ABOUT THE PANEL
SHABANA AZEEZ
Shabana Azeez is an actor whose TV credits include Network 9’s Metrosexual and guest roles in ABC’s The Letdown and Why Are You Like This?, and SBS’s The Hunting. She co-won Best Female Actor at Tropfest in 2019 and has been nominated for Best Performance at Stellar Film Festival (2020), the South Australian Screen Awards (2019, 2020), and WIFT V-FEST (2021). She made her theatre debut in RUMPUS’s production of The Wolves in 2019 and has since worked with the State Theatre Company South Australia and Malthouse Theatre. Current projects include lead roles in Fax Machine Films’ new independent feature Birdeater. Passionate about telling stories that push the envelope, Shabana has worked with a number of female directors, queer creatives, and culturally diverse teams of storytellers.
KEIRA J. SIMMONS
Keira J. Simmons (she/they) is an emerging South Australian sound artist and sound designer based on unceded Kaurna Land. Her work in speculative soundwalking explores bodily engagements with sound as processes of emplacement, with a focus on psychoacoustics and acoustic ecology. They also perform meditative ambient sets, manipulating field recordings and vocal loops to create absorbing textures. As a freelance sound designer and creative she works with local and global artists on creative projects with a focus on queerness, ecology, and embodied theatrical experiences.
ELLIS MOSELEY
Ellis Moseley is an Adelaide-based artist, living and working on traditional land of the Kaurna people. His practice, which encompasses installation and ceramics, often seeks to draw attention to social concerns through symbolic and conceptual gestures that encourage a deeper consideration of our own attitudes and behaviour. Moseley has been the recipient of several Helpmann Academy awards and residency opportunities. He is an ongoing studio tenant at 215 Magill. 2022 saw Moseley’s first solo exhibitions at Linden New Art Gallery and Monash University in Victoria. The artist’s first solo exhibition in South Australia took place in April 2023 at Hugo Michell Gallery project space.
