MEET THE PANEL

Mary Angley (she/they) is an award-winning theatre maker and a recent graduate from the Victoria College of the Arts’ Master of Directing program. A child of The Internet, in her work she reveres the unique properties of both live and digital performance. Her practice spans writing, directing, dramaturgy, and performance, with sporadic forays into design. She received First Class Honours from Flinders University for her practice-led research project: an immersive adaptation of Timon of Athens. For her Masters Showcase, she developed a new work, Hedda GablerGablerGabler, exploring how gameplay can be used to disrupt gender biases in the theatrical canon. After graduating, she created Paper Mouth Theatre as a forum for bringing together emerging creatives to work on experimental projects within a Queer, Feminist framework.

Born in Singapore and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Sam Wilson (he/him) is the songwriter, singer, and guitarist of the Tarntanya-based art-folk band Wake In Fright. In 2019, Sam moved to Adelaide to commence study at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, majoring in Popular Music and Creative Technologies, and in 2022, graduated with first-class honours. As an improvisational musician, Sam has collaborated with South Australian contemporary artists Thea Martin and Derek Pascoe. Sam has released two full-length albums and an EP with Wake In Fright. In 2023, he was awarded a Helpmann Creative Development Grant to record a new album of original songs entitled The Modern Shoe Is Ruining The Foot. In late 2023, he was awarded a Helpmann Creative Investment Fellowship to tour Touch Hands Pack Sting (Wake In Fright’s latest release) to Tokyo and engage in cross-cultural musical exchange.

Sam Matthewman (he/they) is a queer artist and performer based on Kaurna Land in South Australia. Sam’s creative career was ignited as a performer in dance and circus arts, performing throughout Australia and internationally. They graduated from a Bachelor of Contemporary Art at the University of South Australia in mid-2021 and consider themselves both a circus performer and a contemporary artist, blurring the lines between visual art and performance. Sam has since received many accolades since graduating including a Carclew Fellowship, Feltspace Graduate Award, Helpmann Academy David Baker Innovation Award and the prestigious Helpmann Academy British School at Rome Residency.
