Performing Arts Industry Day 29.10.20

Get one-on-one advice from industry leaders.

The Helpmann Academy has gathered a number of exceptional industry leaders to provide South Australia’s emerging theatre makers, writers, directors, and actors with one-on-one feedback on their work or project ideas, and advise them on how to navigate their desired path for career development.

Purposefully selected industry leaders will provide a broad perspective and point of view, sharing their knowledge, experience and advice. Artists will be able to discuss their work and career development plans with the industry leaders they feel are most closely related to their practice. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to meet with a selection of highly respected professionals, available to performing artists who are graduates from Helpmann Academy’s partner institutions, within five years from their final year of study.

Topics of discussion can include:

  • Script development
  • Advice on producing and mounting a show
  • Audience development
  • Casting advice
  • Directing tools

Industry Leaders include:

  • Chris Drummond – Artistic Director, Brink Productions
  • Angela Heesom & Louise Heesom-Smith – Casting Directors, Hessom Casting
  • Rosemary Myers – Artistic Director, Windmill Theatre
  • Andy Packer – Artistic Director, Slingsby Theatre

How the Day will be Structured

Held at The Minor Works Building in the CBD over the duration of one afternoon, a number of small comfortable meeting areas will be set up, where each industry professional will conduct their feedback session.

Time slots of 20 minutes will be programmed, with a 5-minute break in between for moving between meeting spots. Helpmann staff will be timing the sessions and ring a bell when it’s time to move around – in a kind of arts speed dating! A 20-minute afternoon tea break will also be scheduled in.

Our hope is that the sessions will be casual, warm and informative.

Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines will be adhered to.

For artists who have multiple sessions booked, but have time in between, a refreshment area will be available where they can grab a cup of tea or coffee and chat with other artists.

We ask you arrive 10-15 minutes before your first session to check in with Helpmann staff, and make sure you know the lay of the land before commencing.

How to Book Your Sessions

Time slots are available for each industry leader at the following times:

  • 1:15pm
  • 1:40pm
  • 2:05pm
  • 2:45pm
  • 3:10pm

In order to accommodate as many artists as possible, you will have the opportunity to confirm up to two (2) timeslots with your preferred leaders at the time of booking.

Your third preference will be booked tentatively, and if we are able to accommodate this meeting time, we will let you know.

Bookings are on a first come, first served basis. To book your sessions, please call the Helpmann Academy during business hours on (08) 7089 0720.

Bookings close 5.00pm Friday 23 October.

How to Prepare / What to Bring on the Day

To get the most out of your sessions, there are a few things you should do ahead of time.

  • Come prepared with a plan of what you want to talk about and what questions you want to ask. These may be the same for each leader you speak with or vary depending on their expertise
  • Structure your session, and make sure you leave time at the end for extra questions that may arise throughout the conversations.
  • Bring examples of your work, a story synopsis, storyboards, mood boards, concepts, and headshots, etc . We suggest printing them out or having them on a laptop/ipad where they are quickly and easily accessible.
