Jazzmeia Horn Open Masterclass 24.10.24

Current students and graduates from the Elder Conservatorium of Music are invited to attend an exclusive Open Masterclass with returning international jazz sensation and multiple Grammy Award nominee, Jazzmeia Horn.

This is an exceptional opportunity to witness Jazzmeia as she instructs select emerging jazz musicians in a very special masterclass designed specifically for current music students and graduates from the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide.

Jazzmeia will work with three student ensembles and vocalists, as they play one or two pieces together. She will then workshop and critique the performance, before providing feedback to the musicians and attendees.

A discussion facilitated by the Head of Jazz at Elder Conservatorium of Music, Mark Ferguson and Dr Lyndon Gray will focus on bandleading, workshopping original material, communicating arrangements and stage craft tools.

“Exposure to international artists like Jazzmeia Horn is an utterly invaluable opportunity for our Elder Conservatorium jazz students and our alumni. Working alongside an artist of this calibre, our young musicians enjoy a first-rate artistic experience; when married to this level of pedagogical expertise, the experience also leaves them with tools that continue to inform their practice.” –  Professor Anna Goldsworthy, Director of Elder Conservatorium of Music

This is your chance to expand your experience of jazz, not usually open to the public.

Please note that this exclusive Jazzmeia Horn Open Masterclass is free to current Elder Conservatorium students and graduates (within five years of graduation), and high school student groups interested in a career in music. Proof of eligibility will be required when you register your tickets.

Members of the public are welcome to attend. Tickets are $10 +booking fee.

Numbers limited. Book early to secure your spot!

ABOUT JAZZMEIA HORN
Jazzmeia Horn was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, where her talents emerged and blossomed at an arts-focused high school. Horn has been compared to vocal jazz greats such as Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson. She is a multi-award-winning vocalist, having collected the top prizes at the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and the 2015 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition. Horn’s three albums A Social Call (2017), Love and Liberation (2019) and Dear Love (2021) were all nominated for Grammy Awards. Her highly anticipated fourth studio album Messages is released 25 October 2024.

Messages represents a bold new chapter in Jazzmeia Horn’s illustrious career, delving deep into themes of family, love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of artistic freedom. Reflecting on her life and relationships as she tours the world, Horn infuses the album with a deeply personal perspective, balancing the joys and challenges of her journey. Horn’s decision to pare back her ensemble for this album allows her voice to shine even brighter, while still embracing the avant-garde spirit she exhibited in her previous work. The intimate yet expansive sound of Messages is a departure from the big band arrangements of 2021’s Dear Love, showcasing a more focused and introspective side of the artist.
