Learn the art of music reviewing.
Our partners at InReview and UKARIA are offering a unique chance for emerging South Australian creatives to gain insights and develop skills in professional music reviewing.
The project will involve two masterclasses and attendance at a performance at the UKARIA Cultural Centre.
Attendees will write their own review under the guidance of professional music writers and editors, gain feedback and have the chance to have their work published by InReview – South Australia’s home of professional arts reviewing.
The opportunity is open to recent South Australian graduates, honours students and emerging creatives in their final year of study at a South Australian university (see below for full eligibility).
The masterclass, open to six people only, will be run by vastly experienced music reviewer Graham Strahle, with input from InReview’s senior editorial team of David Washington and Suzie Keen.
Strahle said the masterclass was a great opportunity for musicians and other arts graduates/students to add another string to their creative bow.
Topics covered will include:
- Setting goals in criticism
- Thinking from a qualitative standpoint
- Communicating to one’s readership
- Being aware of industry expectations of reviewers
- Understanding the perspective of publishers and arts organisations
- Understanding effective communication
- Improving writing skills
- Working effectively to deadlines
The program will begin with an introductory masterclass from 1pm to 4pm on Thursday 2 November 2023 in the city.
Then the group will be split into two – one group will attend UKARIA 24 at the UKARIA Cultural Centre at 7.30pm on Friday 10 November, while the other will see singer Megan Washington with pianist Paul Hankinson at UKARIA at 7.30pm on Saturday 2 December.
Follow up masterclasses will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Friday 17 November, for group one, and from 1pm to 4pm on Thursday 7 December, for group two.
