Have you ever wanted to learn how an exhibition comes together and what’s really involved with curating a visual arts show?
Join us for this free artist talk and hear from the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition 2023 Project Curator – Hannah Coleman – to learn about how she was empowered to develop and broaden her understanding of designing a space, communicating with exhibiting artists, and overseeing the installation for a major exhibition.
Hannah will talk about her role as Project Curator, speak about the Graduate Exhibition and interview a selection of the participating artists a series of questions about their work.
Working in collaboration with our presenting partner Adelaide Contemporary Experimental (ACE) – South Australia’s leading independent contemporary visual arts organisation – the Helpmann Academy Project Curator mentorship was an incredible development opportunity for Hannah.
Hannah was mentored by Patrice Sharkey, Artistic Director, ACE to develop her skills in creating the cohesive and impactful exhibition that you can currently view at the gallery.
Patrice will also share some of her knowledge around the nitty gritty of curating an exhibition from the selection process to install and beyond, plus some of the key learnings in her role as mentor to Hannah.
About Hannah Coleman
Hannah Coleman (she/her) is an emerging contemporary artist, curator and poet born in South Africa, who has lived in Australia since 1999. Hannah recently graduated a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts at the University of South Australia. Her current work focuses on cultural identity and diaspora, retrospection and catharsis. Her practice is centred around process and the works are often transmissions of memory and sensation voiced through layers of colour and texture. Inspired by the natural world, her family and her peers, Hannah’s curiosity-driven experimentations and methodologies reject traditional approaches and, instead, are grounded in the flexibility of her materials and the inspiration drawn from them. She plans on refining this practice while beginning her exploration into curatorial endeavours where she intends on cultivating discourse surrounding culturally diverse lived experiences; specifically, people of colour and queer identifying people.
