George Street Studios Residents Announced for 2023

15 December 2022

The Helpmann Academy is delighted to announce that the two emerging artists who will be residing at George Street Studios in 2023 are Alice Hu and Brianna Speight.

Alice Hu is an emerging artist who was born in China but has spent most of her life in Australia. Like her background, Alice’s arts practice contains various cultural aspects from bot countries. Working in ceramics, mixed-medium sculptures, installation and painting she is looking to promote the importance of diverse societies through her work while offering her audiences a thought-provoking experience.

“I am seeking to learn more skills that can help me define my concepts and to build artworks that can express the story I want to tell… as I continue to develop as an artist and a person with a multicultural background, I have learnt more about the cultural history of both countries I have called home throughout my life. I realised how my unique aesthetics built from my multicultural background are the core of most of my practice,” comments Alice.

Joining her at George Street Studios is emerging artist, Brianna Speight

Brianna Speight is an emerging artist working primarily with experimental photography. Her research focus are gender issues and post-human feminism, and her work is characterised by layered photographic work with soft textile surfaces interacting with the body, and various objects suspended in compositions which emerge through staging techniques and photomontage.

“I excited about this opportunity to be learning new skills, creating sculptural works and being part of a creative community that will enhance my practice technically, practically, and conceptually. Expanding my photo-based practice, working with new materials, and having the opportunity for the exchange of ideas and techniques is a vital step forward for my artistic practice and presents transformative prospects,” says Brianna.

Located in Thebarton, George Street Studios has been a creative hub and home to several Adelaide based industry-leading makers, artists, and designers working across sculpture, ceramics, installation, prop making, tattoo, and furniture.

These two 12-month residencies at George Street Studios are made possible through the support of Macquarie Group Foundation.
