The Helpmann Academy is delighted to announce a new award empowering early career First Nations artists!
Thanks to the generous support of major partner SA Power Networks, the inaugural First Nations Award will provide an outstanding emerging artist or group with a $5,000 cash prize to refine their artistic practice.
The Award will enable a First Nations artist (individual or group) in their first five years post–graduation to focus on their creative practice. The award acknowledges the artist’s early career achievements and recognises their potential.
Anthony von der Borch, Partnerships and Events Manager at SA Power Networks, is very excited about collaborating with the Helpmann Academy for the new initiative.
“As long–time partners of the Helpmann Academy, it is our privilege to support this exciting new award, recognising the outstanding work of a First Nations creative. At SA Power Networks, we believe in the power of arts to inspire people, create lasting impact, and connect communities. By supporting an early–career First Nations creative practitioner, we are thrilled to contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant creative and cultural landscape. We’re excited about this new initiative and how it champions First Nations talent, while empowering these emerging creatives to bring their visions to life,” says Anthony.
Applicants are encouraged to propose a project or creative development that the prize can assist in realising. The funds may purchase essential services and materials or pay for immediate costs. You may be developing small projects, building digital skills or developing your audience. It may be to support you to continue your creative practice.
The Helpmann Academy is thrilled to offer such a special and exciting award recognising First Nations artistic excellence.
“We are incredibly proud to launch the First Nations Award, which celebrates the extraordinary talent and cultural leadership of emerging First Nations artists. This award is not only a recognition of artistic excellence—it is a dedicated investment in professional development, providing meaningful opportunities for recipients to grow their creative practice, build networks, and develop new work. We extend our heartfelt thanks to SA Power Networks for their vision and commitment to empowering the next generation of First Nations creative leaders through this partnership.” says Jane MacFarlane, CEO Helpmann Academy.
With call–outs closing on Sunday 29 June, eligible artists are encouraged to submit an application here, get in touch with the Helpmann Academy on (08) 7089 0720 or book a free consult via our website. First Nations artists from Flinders University, University of South Australia, or University of Adelaide including CASM, are eligible to apply within five years of graduation.
