INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

BSR RESIDENCY 2023

Applications open Monday 17 October 2022

Applications close on Sunday 27 November 2022 at 11:59pm ACST

For activity occurring between April 2023 and June 2023

The Helpmann Academy invites applications for its three-month residency at The British School at Rome (BSR) for 2023. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an emerging South Australian artist to undertake an immersive residency in the heart of Rome, Italy.

Open to graduates and final year students from our visual arts partner institutions, this residential studio offers an emerging South Australian artist the opportunity to undertake a three-month residency at BSR – Britain’s leading humanities research institute abroad and one of the most prestigious foreign academies in the Italian capital.

The chosen candidate is allocated studio space at the BSR, including residential accommodation and a working area. Taking place from April to June 2023, the residency provides the selected artist with the opportunity to base and develop their practice at BSR while taking full advantage of the school’s world-renowned research facilities, the artistic community and expertise available.

Based in one of the world’s most culturally rich cities, a residency at BSR will also allow the artist to immerse themselves in the culture and artistic history of Rome. Short trips to other areas and cities are allowed, however, it is expected the artist will spend the majority of their time at BSR.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Applications are invited from final year students and graduates (up to seven years following their final year of study) from an eligible program from our partner institutions.

Honours students and graduates are also eligible to apply if the Honours year of study occurred in direct succession of the undergraduate degree and undertaken at a Helpmann Academy partner institution.

It is advised to check with the Helpmann Academy if you meet the eligibility criteria before commencing an application. To check your eligibility, click here

RESIDENCY COSTS

The residency is valued at $30,000 AUD.

The Helpmann Academy will cover all costs of accommodation and studio space at BSR, which includes room and board. Meals are included with board, except for one night per week, to be paid for by the artist.

After all costs of the residency have been covered, the Helpmann Academy will provide the artist with an $8,000 stipend to cover airfares, materials, freight, and other travel related expenses. This needs to be shown in your budget.

Costs not covered by the residency program include potential freight costs, travel and health insurance (compulsory), materials, living expenses over and above what is provided by BSR and the cost of any additional travel undertaken while in Italy.

The artist’s partner can be accommodated for strictly limited periods during the residency but must pay for their own board and lodging at the BSR’s prevailing rates. Children cannot be accommodated at the residency, but artists do have the option of their partner and children lodging elsewhere in Rome.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

Outcomes from the residency can be derived from either a research-based project, or time and space to create work and experiment with new techniques and approaches. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate both the professional development and artistic outcomes of their proposed project.

While in Rome, the artist is strongly encouraged to participate as fully as possible in the academic and collegiate life of the school, which includes evening lectures on a range of subjects and shared meals.

The artist will be expected to show work in the group Mostra (BSR residents) exhibition towards the end of the tenure. Each artist will be included in the BSR’s annual Fine Arts catalogue.
