George Street Studios Residency 2023

APPLY FOR 2023

Located in Thebarton, George Street Studios has been a creative hub and home to several Adelaide based industry-leading makers, artists, and designers working across sculpture, ceramics, installation, prop making, tattoo, and furniture. Over and above studio space, George Street Studios services include bespoke metal fabrication and mechanical engineering.

The Helpmann Academy 2023 George Street Studios residency provides two eligible emerging South Australian artists with a unique 12-month studio residency. This opportunity is suitable for artists working across sculpture, furniture or mixed media.

The strength of its members at George Street Studios is their collective knowledge, experience, and facilities that can assist emerging artists to manifest their vision with access to specialised space, machinery, and technical skills. Through long-term and sustainable practices, the studio members have an advanced understanding of technical process, materials and suppliers required to advance most artistic visions and projects.

There is a strong sense of camaraderie at the studios and a commitment to emerging artists. Resident artists are also able to access a network of suppliers and services as you develop your practice and career

The successful participants will be awarded a rent-free studio space, providing them the critical time, space, support and freedom to both create new work, and develop their career.

A George Street Studios residency will appeal to artists working across sculpture, furniture or mixed media. The selected artists will be awarded a shared studio space with WIFI, rent free for 12-months.

‘The studio environment at George Street Studios is unlike any other studio I have come into contact with due to the sheer abundance of equipment they possess. Working in sculptural installation, being granted access to not only use but further develop my technical knowledge has awarded me the ability to create completely new work to a higher standard.’
Kate Bohunnis, George Street Studio Residency participant

WHY APPLY?
A residency provides you with a dedicated studio space outside of your usual surroundings. For the term of the residency, you will have time and space for reflection and experimentation as you delve deeper into your practice, create new work, meet other artists, and be exposed to a community of creative practitioners outside of your regular network. By meeting other artists and makers, you will be exposed to new ideas and ways of working as you share more than just equipment.
