For one hundred years, the British School at Rome (BSR) has supported world-class researchers and contemporary artists. The BSR is a centre of interdisciplinary research excellence based in Rome, Italy. It is one of the leading research institutions and most prestigious foreign academies in the Italian capital.
This year, multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker Tiah Trimboli undertook the three-month residency.
“My experience so far at the British School at Rome has exceeded my expectations in ways that are hard to put into words. The opportunity to live and work alongside such a diverse and inspiring community of artists and scholars has already had a profound impact on both my creative practice and personal development. Rome itself has been an endless source of inspiration. The support from Helpmann Academy has made this all possible. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the access or space to immerse myself so fully, take creative risks and deeply reflect on the kind of artist I want to become.”

A 2020 graduate of Flinders University, Tiah specialises in multimedia installation and experimental film themed around modern identity and isolation. Her work has been displayed at Sauerbier House, Adelaide Festival Centre’s Moving Image Program, and Carclew.
“This residency represents a crucial stepping stone in my early career as a filmmaker and visual artist, and I’m beyond excited to be completely immersed in the flourishing arts community at the BSR as well as the rich culture of Rome, which will undoubtedly elevate my practice to fresh and exciting places.”

It fosters an environment where work of international significance and impact can be created, with connections to Britain and the Commonwealth, and serves as a bridge into the intellectual and cultural heart of Rome and Italy.
