Announcement: fab Residency 2025 Recipients

Now in its second year, fab is a new artist–led studio complex in Kent Town.

The Helpmann Academy is incredibly proud of our long-term partnership with George Street Studios and delighted to continue the partnership with a renewed incarnation of the program at fab.

We are thrilled to introduce emerging artists Gemma Slattery and Aidan Hughes as the 2025 recipients of the fab Studio Residency program!

Gemma Slattery (she/they) is an emerging artist specialising in ceramics and drawing. Her practice often harnesses the physical exertion behind the making to explore themes of the subconscious, emotions, isolation and togetherness, resulting in drawings characterised by heavy smudges in charcoal, textural ceramic sculptures and curious illustrations on pots and on paper. Their work encourages viewers to consider knowledge beyond words, human values and struggles, and the importance of connection.

Gemma feels that a sense of both the familiar and the uncomfortable is key to opening these lines of questioning, exploring how symbolism and whimsy can be paired with body–driven, expressive works.

As a recent graduate of Flinders University, the fab Residency is the perfect step forward for Gemma.

“I am thrilled to be accepted for this opportunity because it will provide the environment I need at this point in my career to continue developing exhibition work and a sustainable studio practice. I resonate with the community and values at fab Workshop and it means a lot to me to be a part of this group of awesome creatives,” they said.

As an emerging artist living and working on Kaurna Country and a graduate of the University of South Australia, the fab Residency is an ideal career opportunity for Aidan too.

Unlike Gemma’s practice, Aidan Hughes’ work is centred around themes of technology. He creates data-driven distortions and sculptural assemblages that blur the boundaries between organic and synthetic forms, exploring technology’s relationship with human transformation. By socketing the body within these systems, his work deconstructs the ways in which identity, flesh, and perception are mediated through digital interfaces.

Aidan is excited to commence a residency where he’ll be immersed in a community of likeminded artists.

“This opportunity goes beyond just the access to exceptional facilities and the expert guidance of fab workshop/studios and Helpmann Academy. It opens rare avenues for skill development and bold experimentation, paving the way for a transformative shift in my art practice,” Aidan said.

The Helpmann Academy / fab Studio Residency provides a 12-month rent-free shared studio space, access and training to use on-site machinery, tools and equipment as well as technical assistance in an inclusive space.
