215 Magill Resident 2025 Announced

4 December 2024

215 Magill is home to a range of practicing artists and makers, showcasing the best in South Australian made furniture, art and design. Located in Maylands, there is a full machine shop for woodwork in addition to the studio space. This studio opportunity at 215 Magill provides emerging artists with the critical time, space, and freedom to evolve their practice, create new work, expose them to the creative community and skill share.

We’re delighted to announce that University of South Australia graduate, Marlize de Klerk, has been awarded the 215 Magill residency for 2025. This residency will provide Marlize with a 12-month rent-free studio to expand and grow her practice to create new work and expose her to new networks.

Marlize de Klerk is a South African-born ceramic artist working on Kaurna Land, South Australia.

Marlize’s work explores the spiritual energy of objects, where embedded marks evoke connections to the past and invite viewers to engage with memories and emotions. By emphasising the significance of specific moments, her practice prompts sensory experiences that recall her childhood while encouraging viewers to reflect on their own personal histories.

Marlize completed her Bachelor of Contemporary Art in 2022 and received the David Hayden Professional Development Award at the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition in 2023. She graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) in 2024.

In 2024, Marlize’s work was exhibited at the Art Images Gallery in Norwood alongside notable Australian artist Peter Watts and Christina Cordero.

Her research continues to push the boundaries of how ceramics express memory and narrative, transforming vessels into keepers of stories.

“The residency will provide time and resources to develop meaningful work, bridging art, memory, and therapeutic practices. It marks a pivotal step in transitioning to independent practice, exploring crafted objects’ potential to evoke memories, foster emotional engagement, and support cognitive health, particularly in dementia care and therapeutic contexts.” – Marlize De Klerk

Marlize will commence her residency next year in early 2025.
