Helpmann Academy partners with the City of Adelaide to amplify and celebrate the next generation of jazz and First Nations musicians.
A Night of Jazz is the Helpmann Academy’s annual Jazz Awards event and concert that honours outstanding musicians from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide.
This event has been a firm fixture on the Helpmann Academy’s calendar of events and has seen a range of international and national guest artists, teach and mentor our talented homegrown jazz students and graduates.
The Helpmann Academy are delighted announce that international jazz vocal sensation, Jazzmeia Horn will return to Adelaide in October 2024, this time, with an expanded remit.
Horn and the Helpmann Academy will build on the success of A Night of Jazz with the Music Legacy and Future Building: Helpmann Academy 30th Anniversary Showcase, which has been made possible through a new Cultural Strategic Partnership with the City of Adelaide.
The partnership will deliver a series of masterclasses for Adelaide’s First Nations musicians through Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM). Horn will also collaborate with local hip hop group DEM MOB through CASM plus rising jazz students from the Elder Conservatorium of Music to write, record and produce a new music track and video.
Jane MacFarlane, Helpmann Academy CEO says: “We’re so thrilled to welcome Jazzmeia Horn back to Adelaide to mentor and perform with Adelaide’s top emerging jazz musicians and for the first time, First Nations musicians from CASM. Exposure to a world-class talent like Jazzmeia can be career defining for young, up and coming musicians. We’re so excited to also shine a spotlight on Adelaide’s status as a UNESCO City of Music to an international artist like Jazzmeia.”
An open masterclass and creative activations across satellite sites from Helpmann Academy alumni will also feature during a jam-packed week in October.
Additional opportunities to showcase the musical legacy of Helpmann Academy over the past 30 years and City of Adelaide, Australia’s only city of UNESCO are also available to eligible emerging visual artists through a site-specific commission on Adelaide Town Hall’s temporary hoarding.
City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith says: “Being Australia’s only UNESCO City of Music isn’t just about celebrating those homegrown artists who have made it big, but also finding and fostering a new generation of talent.
The City of Adelaide’s community-led Cultural Strategic Partnerships give First Nations and emerging jazz artists the chance to learn from one of the best: Jazzmeia Horn, credited by the New York Times as one of the most exciting young vocalists in jazz.”
