Write on the Money – Top Grant Writing Tips Revealed

28 July 2023

Need help writing the perfect grant application? Next Wednesday 2 August 2023 we’re teaming up with our good friends at Carclew to present Write on the Money. This grant writing workshop is a practical and informative session, created especially for emerging artists and creatives from all disciplines.

Write on the Money covers all areas of the grant application process, from securing support, to summarising your project, responding to criteria, and conquering your budget. Our experts from Helpmann Academy and Carclew will step you through the basics, plus all the tips and tricks you need to write a compelling application that makes the selection panel sit up and take notice.

The workshop includes a Q&A panel discussion with emerging artists – Gemma Salomon, Chloe Noble and Danielle Lim – who have received funding from both Helpmann Academy and Carclew.

Ahead of next Wednesday’s session, we asked our panel of emerging creatives for their top tips when writing a grant application.

Gemma graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama). She is an emerging film maker and director. In 2023 she will direct Future Eaters, a horror short written and directed by Salomon and supported by the Helpmann Academy. She is currently in the 2023 cohort of Helpmann Academy’s Creative Innovator program.

Gemma says, “research the funding body and the funding guidelines – know the audience you are writing for. Not to change your project but to understand what will get people excited. Make them sit up in their seats and pay attention!”

Danielle graduated from Flinders Drama Centre with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours). She is an emerging theatre actor and writer. Danielle received a Helpmann Academy Creative Development Grant to support her adaption Van Badham’s 2004 play, Bang On The Nerve

Danielle says, “my Number ONE tip for writing a grant application is to elaborate with the assumption that the grant panel doesn’t know who you are and what your artform is, and to always get fresh eyes (either someone who also works in the industry or someone who doesn’t) to look over your application and provide feedback. That way, you will get a better sense of how clear your project proposal is!”

Chloe is an emerging visual artist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts) from Flinders University. Chloe was a Sharehouse Resident in 2022 at Carclew House and part of The Stobie Pole Project 2022 from Helpmann Academy.

Chloe says, “have a contingency plan – apply for as many opportunities as possible – be specific – and make sure your application fits the grant guidelines.”

We know how crucial grants can be for bringing your creative projects to life, so we’re here to help you refine your grant writing skills and get the funding you deserve.
