Helpmann Academy InReview Mentorship 2023

Do you have ambitions to be an arts reviewer, but don’t know where to begin?

The Helpmann Academy InReview Mentorship 2023 seeks to develop the next generation of arts reviewers and rebuild the practice of robust discourse and analysis of South Australian performing and visual arts.

The mentoring program, a partnership between Helpmann Academy and InReview, will connect experienced arts writers with emerging voices, as part of a program to strengthen coverage of arts and culture in South Australia.

InReview is a unique non-profit arts journalism project designed to nurture professional arts reviewing in Australia, particularly for areas in which the practice is under threat. InReview publishes free-to-access reviews and journalism every week for the benefit of the arts sector, audiences and the community, covering the full breadth of arts and culture practices.

The successful mentee will be matched with an InReview mentor or mentors, who will be assigned based on the interests and background of the mentee. The mentor(s) work with them in all aspects of writing reviews as well as providing career advice. The mentorship will be conducted over eight hours per week for ten weeks. Throughout the program, the mentee will build their skills with the aim to produce several written reviews for publication in InReview.

This mentorship program is designed for emerging creatives from any background who have an interest in arts writing. You must be a graduate from an eligible program at one of Helpmann Academy’s partner institutions. You can check your eligibility here.

“I was fortunate enough to be the Round 1 recipient of the Helpmann Academy InReview Mentorship in 2023. The experience working with industry professionals and esteemed writers Samela Harris and Graham Strahle was invaluable and has undoubtedly kickstarted my writing, reviewing and media career. Working with Samela and Graham has been a delight. They are both so knowledgeable and have given me skills that I have already found myself looking to. Working with Arts Editor Suzie Keen has also been incredibly helpful.” – Shannon Pearce, InReview Mentorship recipient
